Olivia Regnault
Psy.D, Psychologist
Dr. Olivia Regnault is a psychologist in private practice and in a hospital setting (CHUM). She completed her PhD at the University of Montreal in 2013.
Clinically, Dr. Regnault has developed an interest in health psychology, particularly in patient adaptation to severe and/or chronic health conditions. She has worked in various areas of health psychology: oncology, neurology, infertility, kidney and liver transplantation, palliative care, burn clinic and chronic pain clinic. It values working in collaboration with patients and their loved ones to develop personal resources to help them cope with the adversity of a medical condition. In a broader sense, Dr. Regnault also works with clients who present, for example, problems of adjustment, burnout, anxiety or bereavement during life transitions.
Training in health psychology
Over the past few years, Dr. Regnault has developed a keen interest in developing training programs for the general public and stakeholders. She started in 2006 by training burn patients and their medical teams on: self-image, post-traumatic reactions, compassion stress, post-burn reactions and pain management. She has subsequently given several oncology trainings and conferences to patients and caregivers on the psychological reactions to cancer and the importance of teaming up with loved ones.
My approach
I intervene using an approach that combines cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodynamics. Also, as I often say to my patients, “You are the person who knows himself best. I position myself as an accompaniment/guide to your difficulties, without however giving instructions. In general, I fundamentally believe that the work of therapy can allow us to become more and more ourselves in our life choices and thus acquire greater freedom. I approach therapy work as an opportunity for my patient to better know and understand themselves. I also consider that the person comes with his or her own life experience and it will sometimes be relevant to make connections with what you have experienced to better understand your current reactions.
